The area of Lake Stymphalia had been inhabited for many centuries by communities who lived and prospered in an economy harmonized with all of nature’s elements. In the years that followed the mechanisation of production processes, the area’s economic history was forgotten, its intangible cultural heritage was devalued and its natural environment was gravely endangered. For all of the above reasons, the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation undertook a research programme focusing on the environment and the traditional crafts in the area. Consequently, in cooperation with local authorities and with the help of local communities, in 2010 the Group opened the Environment Museum of Stymphalia, which is housed in a building that has won awards for its original design and the functional, yet environmentally-friendly, architectural solutions.
Today, adults as well as children visiting the Museum can learn all about the natural and cultural wealth of the area, and also develop special awareness on issues such as the conservation of cultural heritage and the protection of the environment.
The Guide to the Environment Museum of Stymphalia is a useful tool in the visitor’s hands, providing help in getting acquainted with the exhibition of he Museum as well as with this exceptional land of mythology.
