DESCRIPTION
In September 2016, the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation inaugurated the ninth museum in a row of its Museum
Network: the Silversmithing Museum in Ioannina, in the western bastion of the Castle’s southeastern citadel (Its Kale).

The Silversmithing Museum’s reception by local society greatly surpassed our expectations. The Museum has already become a popular destination not only for the town’s inhabitants and those of the wider region, but also visitors from all over Greece.

Silversmithing is an integral part of the cultural identity and heritage of Epirus. It is imperative that this identity and this heritage be preserved, especially in light of the fact that, today, because of silver objects now being produced industrially, the craftsmen working with silver face serious problems.

Showcasing the achievements of local silversmithing was the main reason for creating the Silversmithing Museum in Ioannina.

We would like to believe that the display of the wealth of artefacts (bourgeois utensils, weapons, jewellery, and others) is served in the best possible manner by the comprehensive museum study, which exploits the possibilities offered by the fact that the Museum is housed in one of the town’s historical buildings, rich in memories.

The Guide to the Silversmithing Museum is a useful tool in the visitor’s hands, providing help in appreciating the wealth of artefacts, but also in understanding why Ioannina was –and remains– famous for its silverwork of all kinds.

The Guide is also available in Greek.
